Welcome back, aviation enthusiasts! In today’s video, we’re taking a look at some of the most notoriously turbulent flight routes in the world. From mountainous approaches to unpredictable ocean winds, these flights test even the most seasoned travellers. Buckle up!

What Causes Turbulence?
Turbulence occurs when planes encounter unstable air, often caused by jet streams, weather fronts, or the disruption of air by terrain. The experience can range from mild bumps to severe jolts. While it may feel scary, modern aircraft are built to handle it.

Kathmandu’s Lukla Airport (Nepal).
First on our list is the route into Lukla Airport, known as the gateway to Mount Everest. This tiny runway is nestled between towering Himalayan peaks, making winds shift unpredictably. Pilots navigate steep drops and sudden turbulence during approach, creating a white-knuckle experience for passengers.

Hong Kong’s Old Kai Tak Approach (Historical).
Though Kai Tak Airport closed in 1998, it remains legendary for its treacherous approach. Aircraft had to make a sharp, low-altitude right turn over Kowloon’s skyscrapers, often battling crosswinds. Modern Hong Kong International Airport is much safer, but the famous Kai Tak approach still lives on in aviation history.

Wellington International (New Zealand).
Wellington is known as the ‘Windy City’ for good reason. Situated between Cook Strait and mountainous terrain, the airport faces constant gale-force crosswinds. Pilots have to remain extra vigilant during takeoffs and landings, making this short runway one of the most challenging in the Southern Hemisphere.

Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport (Saba Island).
With the world’s shortest commercial runway at just under 400 meters (1,312 ft), Saba Island’s airport is perched on a rocky outcrop. Gusty trade winds and sudden wind shear around the island’s cliffs can cause turbulent conditions, testing even the best pilot’s skills.

Denver International (USA).
Denver sits a mile above sea level and is surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. The area’s high altitude and rapidly changing weather produce strong downdrafts and mountain waves. These can create moderate to severe turbulence, especially during winter storms.
