Rolling Stones Rewind The Clock For ‘Stars’ Video

The Rolling Stones are leaning all the way into the uncanny valley for the video to their new single “In the Stars,” enlisting the AI-driven deepfake company founded by South Park‘s Trey Parker and Matt Stone to digitally rewind the band back to its early 1970s heyday.
The clip for the lead single from the Stones’ upcoming LP Foreign Tongues was directed by longtime collaborator Francois Rousselet, whose previous work with the band includes videos for “Angry” and “Ride ’Em on Down.” This time around, Rousselet taps into the increasingly surreal possibilities of AI-assisted visual effects courtesy of Parker and Stone’s Deep Voodoo.

The result is a slick montage that places digitally de-aged versions of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood inside a decades-spanning warehouse party. For good measure, Marty Supreme actress Odessa A’zion literally licks the face of the Stones frontman, who in real life is 82 years old.
“Are you kidding me? It’s my dream,” A’zion says of appearing in the video. “The first record that I ever got that I listened to from start to finish was Tattoo You. I’m obsessed with the Rolling Stones. This is in my bucket list for sure.”
Deep Voodoo previously handled the striking face transformations in Kendrick Lamar’s landmark 2022 video for “The Heart Part 5,” which digitally morphed the rapper into figures including O.J. Simpson, Kanye West and Kobe Bryant. More recently, the firm also assisted in de-aging Billy Joel for the 2024 video for “Turn the Lights Back On.”
Foreign Tongues is due July 10 and re-teams the Stones with producer Andrew Watt, who helmed 2023’s Hackney Diamonds. It features an eye-popping array of guest stars: Paul McCartney (who also made a cameo on Hackey Diamonds) Steve Winwood and both Robert Smith of the Cure and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Longtime Stones sideman Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford and Steve Jordan also lend a hand.
