Sia’s 2016 Coachella Set Is Coming To Theaters

Ten years after transforming the Coachella main stage into something more like performance art, Sia is bringing the experience to movie theaters. Trafalgar Releasing has announced Sia: Nostalgic for the Present, a remastered cinematic presentation of the singer’s landmark 2016 Coachella set. The limited theatrical event opens July 23 in select cinemas worldwide.

Directed by Sia and longtime collaborator Daniel Askill, the film revisits a show that eschewed traditional concert theatrics in favor of elaborate choreography, striking visuals and a cast of actors and dancers who brought the songs to life. The production stars Maddie Ziegler, Kristen Wiig, Paul Dano, Ben Mendelsohn, Gaby Hoffmann and Tig Notaro, with choreography by Ryan Heffington.

According to the filmmakers, Nostalgic for the Present stands apart from a standard concert movie. Sia toured the world with a live production that mirrored the film frame for frame, and the newly restored version is being presented on its own for the first time. “Working with Sia on Nostalgic for the Present has been a dream,” Askill says. “Her music and her emotional instincts opened space for something that doesn’t exist anywhere else at the intersection of performance, music and film.”

“Working with some of the greatest artists of our time was a thrilling, tremendous journey that I would take over and over again, if given the opportunity,” Sia adds. “I am humbled by the talent of everyone involved and so grateful for the experience. I am nostalgic for the present.”

Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing, described the original Coachella appearance as “exactly the kind of cultural moment that belongs on the big screen.”
